A summarized version of the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) Admission Process and Subject List for Prepared for Skola Online School website and student guidance.

NIOS Admission Process

1 Check Eligibility For Secondary (Class X): Must have passed Class VIII and be of required age.
For Senior Secondary (Class XII): Must have passed Class X from a recognised board.
Age & qualification criteria apply.
2 Decide Stream Choose from: Stream 1 (Fresh Admission), Stream 2 (Failed Students), Stream 3/4 (On-Demand). Stream choice affects fee & subject options.
3 Online Application Visit skolaonline.org, fill details and submit via the portal. Use online portal for registration.
4 Pay Fee Pay admission & subject fee online. Fee varies by course, stream, and late fee slab.
5 Select Subjects & Study Centre Choose 5 main subjects + 2 optional (max 7). Select Accredited Institution if needed. Subject choice important for exams.
6 Submission & Confirmation Submit form, note reference number, wait for enrolment confirmation. Enrolment number issued after approval.
7 Attend Programme & Study Get study materials, attend Personal Contact Programme (PCP) or online classes. Study support through Skola online classes.
8 Appear for Examinations NIOS conducts exams twice yearly: April/May (Block I) & Oct/Nov (Block II). Select appropriate exam block.
9 Get Results & Certification After exams, results declared and certificates issued. Reappear if needed. Recognised by universities and government jobs.
Admission Deadlines Example (Block I – 2025–26):
• Without late fee: 16 Mar 2025 – 31 Jul 2025
• With Rs 260 late fee: 1 – 15 Aug 2025
• With Rs 520 late fee: 16 – 31 Aug 2025
• With Rs 910 late fee: 1 – 15 Sep 2025

NIOS Subject List (Academic)

Students can select a minimum of five subjects including at least one language. Up to two additional subjects can be chosen. Below are commonly offered subjects.

Foot Note:

Full-time Students have to select a minimum of five subjects, with English and a vocational subject being mandatory. The remaining subjects must be from Group B, C, D, E and F. However, Students can opt for only one subject from each of Group C, D, E and F as Board exams for these subjects are held on the same day and time.

Two additional subjects can be taken from any group (only one subject from each group C, D, E and F) with an additional fee as per NIOS norms.

Subjects with asterisk * have a theory as well as practical work.

Students studying with another school, home-schooled or as a private candidate may opt to study one or more subjects online through SKOLA Online School. Students studying under any other curriculum can also register with us.
